A credential for professionals who facilitates and promotes positive growth in self, specific populations (i.e. groups at risk developing substance use issues), and the community at large. This professional uses specific knowledge and skills to design, implement and evaluate programs aimed at precluding or reducing problems caused by the use of substances.

Formal Education: Minimum high school diploma/GED.
Prevention Work Experience: One (1) year of full-time of 2000 hours of part-time work experience as an alcohol, tobacco, and drug use prevention specialist.
Current Job Description: Copy of current prevention specialist job description, obtained from current employer, and which must be signed by both the applicant and their immediate supervisor.
On-The-Job Supervision: 120 hours of on-the-job supervision of qualifying work experience wit ha minimum of 10 ours of supervision in each prevention domain.
Education/Training: 175 hours of prevention relevant education/training of which 24 hours must be specific to alcohol, tobacco and other drugs and 6 hours in prevention ethics.
Examination: Once application is approved, applicant must pass the IC&RC Examination for Prevention Specialists (PS examination).
